SERIES OF CAPACITY-BUILDING TRAINING SESSIONS FOR PRISONERS WERE HELD

From September to December 2023, New Generation Humanitarian NGO (NGNGO) held a series of training sessions and information meetings aimed at building the capacities of people kept in criminal executive institutions (CEI) of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia.

 

The goal of the trainings was to build the capacities and develop the leadership skills of people kept in the CEIs of Armenia, in the field of HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis, hepatitides, methadone maintenance treatment and the right to health through educational and informational meetings, as well as provide education-information and prevention materials.

 

The following topics were presented in the scope of the training sessions:

  • HIV and AIDS, hepatitides prevention among people kept in CEIs,
  • Tuberculosis prevention among people kept in CEIs,
  • Methadone maintenance treatment,
  • The right to health.

 

The topics were presented by the experts of the National Center for Infectious Diseases CJSC of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia (NCID), National Center for Pulmonology SNCO of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia (NCP), National Center for Addictions Treatment CJSC of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia (NCAT)  and New Generation Humanitarian NGO:

 

  • Vardan Arzakanyan – head of the epidemiological control and consulting department, NCID
  • Kristine Lalayan – doctor-epidemiologist, NCID
  • Siranush Martoyan – doctor-epidemiologist, NCID
  • Anik Ulumyan – head of children’s department, doctor- phthisiologist /pediatrician, NCP
  • Toros Harutyunyan – head of reception, doctor- phthisiologist /pediatrician, NCP
  • Anna Asatryan – head of maintenance treatment service, NCAT
  • Anahit Mkrtchyan – NGNGO expert, attorney
  • Shushan Khnkoyan – NGNGO lawyer

 

The training sessions were organized in “Artik”, “Sevan”, “Vanadzor”, “Nubarashen”, “Abovyan”, “Armavir”, “Hospital for Convicts”, “Vardashen” and “Goris” CEIs of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia.

 

As a result of the training sessions, education-informational meetings, 191 people kept in CEIs of Armenia built their capacities and raised their awareness about HIV, AIDS, hepatitides, tuberculosis, methadone maintenance treatment and the right to health, as well as were provided with education-information and prevention materials.

 

At the end of the training sessions, the participants were awarded with certificates, and they also had the opportunity for individual consultations both with the doctors and lawyers.

 

Considering the registered results, the series of training sessions and educational meetings for people kept in the CEIs of Armenia will be continuous.   

 

 

The training sessions were organized within the HIV Prevention project which is implemented by New Generation Humanitarian NGO with financial support of the Ministry of Health from the funds of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, in cooperation with the National Center for Infectious Diseases CJSC.

 

The Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia, the Criminal Executive Service of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia, the National Center for Pulmonology SNCO of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia and the National Center for Addictions Treatment CJSC of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Armenia also contributed to the implementation of the training sessions.
